BACKUS exists to organize, amplify, and advocate — ensuring that southern Colorado minority voices are centered in the Democratic Party’s priorities, platforms, policies, and leadership.
This chapter was created to fill a real gap in counties where all of these identities exist — Black, Latino, Indigenous, Asian, immigrant, multiracial, and more — but where none of us individually make up a large enough share (yet) of the Democratic space to build power alone. In many southern Colorado counties, we need to build chapters of other race‑based caucuses, and BACKUS serves as a starting point until members choose to evolve into formal race caucus chapters under their respective identity.
Mixed‑race communities are often left out of this equation, despite being a growing and significant part of our region — especially in counties shaped by military influence, where multiracial families and diverse cultural backgrounds are more common. BACKUS provides a political home for these communities as well, ensuring they are not overlooked or forced to choose between identities in order to participate.
We are based in El Paso County, but everything we do is hybrid, and we welcome members from all southern counties (others welcome as well) to participate fully. You are not alone — you have a place here, and your voice matters. Remember: Our Liberation is Bound Together.
